| Welcome
to the Marsa Cricket Club housed within the facilities
of its parent Main Club, the Marsa Sports &
Country Club. Situated in the Mediterranean, the
Maltese Islands boast a temperate climate enabling
for all-year-round cricket. Very occasional rain
showers might fall in the Winter months of Nov
– Feb but matches are rarely cancelled or
abandoned. However the opposite occurs during
the Summer months of Jun – Sept with shade
temperatures around 40°C in August. During
the other months, expect exceedingly mild conditions
with a slight breeze to top up your sun-tan.
Cricket has been played on the
existing site for over a century. A cricket match
is played every Saturday at the club, with touring
sides offered both weekend and midweek matches.
Any keen cricketer, on holiday or business, is
very welcome to join the locals in one of the
regular Saturday matches.
The club’s central position
makes it easily accessible with local transport.
However large groups, such as cricket teams, are
advised to use chauffeur-driven mini-buses or
self-drive cars as the best means of transport
to the club. The Marsa CC is affiliated to the
Malta Cricket Association.
The facilities include a well-grassed
outfield, net-practise area and a colonial-style
pavilion. The oval measures some 125 metres by
90 metres wide. The pitch is a concrete strip
with an artificial mat (Wimbledon Unreal Grass)
glued on top. This makes rubber-soled shoes a
pre-requisite. Maltese limestone building-bricks
demarcate the boundary and make up the large sight-screens.
The pavilion is also built from
these bricks and houses a changing-room with showers
and a kit-room. Outside the pavilion is a wooden-fenced
enclosure. To one side of the pavilion are two
practise-nets of similar construction to the central
pitch. The grass outfield is kept green throughout
the year by means of a sprinkler system. Surrounding
the ground are mature trees and bushes which have
been known to claim the odd cricket-ball.
Numerous touring sides have enjoyed
playing at Marsa with many returning on a regular
basis. Most tourists come from England however
there have been teams from many other countries,
including America, Australia, Cyprus, Denmark,
Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg,
Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Switzerland and
Wales.
Many RN ships have enjoyed playing at the club
during their short breaks in Valletta’s
Grand Harbour.
Interest in touring the Marsa
CC is constantly on the increase. We suggest that
you make your enquiries as early as possible.
To avoid disappointment, some clubs book their
dates as early as two years prior to travelling.
The busiest months tend to be mid-March to early-May
for pre-season outdoor match practise and late-September
to early- November for post-season social matches.
