Dining Around in Malta - challenge your taste buds

You may opt to stay on half board, full board or all inclusive basis at the hotel, in which case most of the hotels offer excellent food combinations and variations. Sometimes this is the only way out, like when you are staying in the Comino Hotel with no neighboring restaurants. However in most cases you would be surrounded by restaurants of all types and budget.

The cost for a meal varies between Lm1.50 for a fast food restaurant to Lm10.00 for a full course meal in a leading restaurant. So practically you can get a decent meal in a different restaurant on every other night, with the same cost of a half board upgrade. Or maybe the best would be to combine both options having a few nights out and a few nights at the hotel, especially when returning from full day trips.

One can obviously find restaurants serving food from all the continents like Italian, French, British, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Malaysian, Russian and many more. But one cannot miss out on having a go at the traditional cuisine. Fried rabbit in garlic and wine is the most common of the typical Maltese dishes, however if one wants there are many other typical meals like "Pastizzi" (traditional cheese and pea cakes), "Hobz biz-zejt" (delicious Maltese bread with tuna, pickles and peppered goat cheese), "Bragioli" (beef olives), "soppa ta 'armla" (delicious vegetable soup with goat cheese), "lampuki" (Blue Dolphin fish), peppered octopus, stuffed marrows and many more. One can find a few restaurants serving typical foods in the main resorts but the best are to be found around the small typical villages so look and ask around wisely.

Obviously when on the islands you cannot miss out on indulging in some of the local fresh fish in season. There are loads of restaurants specialising in sea food, the best of which can be found in St Julian's, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk and in Gozo. The most common fresh fish will be Silver Bream, Dentici, Grouper, Swordfish, Red Mullet, Octopus, Calamari, Mussels and Shrimps. The best fish restaurants will have a display and let you choose your own fish at time of order. If you don't see a display you may always ask the waiter and they would probably bring it at the table.
